NIPSCO will begin installing new gas modules in January 2026 as they transition to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Per the utility, "There will be no interruption of gas service. "
Technicians from InfraSource (a subsidiary of the subcontractor Quanta Utility Engineering Services) "will carry photo identification, wear uniforms, and drive marked vehicles. The installation process will be done at not charge and will typically take less than 15 minutes."

On the day of installation, a service technician will come to your home or business to change out the equipment. The technician will knock on your door to check if you are home, but you do not need to be home for the exchange to take place. In most cases, the technician will not need to enter customer homes or businesses. However, the technician will request access if the meter is located inside or behind a locked gate. The technician will leave a door hanger with information about your new module when the job is done.
If you are not at home during the visit, the technician will leave a door hanger indicating that the new module was installed or informing the customer how to schedule an installation appointment if QUES was unable to access the meter.
In some cases, further work may be needed on your meter for the AMI module to be installed. They write:
If that is the case, your meter will be exchanged with a new gas meter that seamlessly integrates with the AMI system. You will be notified via a letter in the mail at least 14 days in advance of the installation. Rest assured your meter will continue to operate safely while you await your meter exchange.
Meter exchanges will be completed by InfraSource Construction LLC (IFS), a NIPSCO subcontractor. The technicians will carry photo identification, wear uniforms and drive marked vehicles.
The installation process will be done at no charge. To complete this work, your gas service will be temporarily interrupted, and the InfraSource technician will need to enter your home to perform a relight (restoring gas to at least one appliance). This work will require us to shut off the gas service while the meter is being exchanged and the appliance is relit.
If you are not at home during the visit, the meter will be exchanged and gas service will be temporarily interrupted. The technician will leave a door hanger that will inform you how to schedule an appointment for your gas-based appliance relight.

Subcontractor employees will wear uniform while installing new gas modules.
InfraSource, a subsidiary of Quanta Services Company, will install modules for NIPSCO. The electric utility Indiana & Michigan Power did an upgrade to its electricity metering in KPVillas in 2022.
