Early indicators suggest the neighborhood mosquito population is declining significantly, in part due to efforts by the St. Joseph County Department of Health. In 2024 the County targeted catch basins as mosquito breeding sites, including KPVillas in its pilot program. A second white dot painted on the gratings indicates a second pass in 2025.

Brett Davis, Vector Coordinator for SJC Dept. of Health, writes:
Preliminary results from last year showed that through our larval control efforts, mosquito population was down approximately 30% county-wide. However, in the Knollwood area where we piloted our catch basin treatments, mosquito populations were down 70%.
This is extremely encouraging, so we treated the basins again this year with a slightly different product to see if there was a discernible difference in efficacy. We’ve also expanded the area in which we’ve mapped and treated basins this year, as the pilot indicates that a widespread basin treatment effort is warranted.
