2024 Resolution: Guide HOA Decisions

Toward a Native Plant Friendly HOA by the Indiana Native Plant Society (INPS) recommends HOAs support native plants in their landscaping to address erosion, algae issues, nuisance wildlife conflicts, and costly turfgrass maintenance. Please make a 2024 resolution to guide and to implement KPVillas landscaping decisions that serve our community well.

A 2023 survey by a team of Indiana naturalists confirmed the KPVillas parcel containing the HOA retention pond is ripe for community stewardship. Toward that end, volunteers in KPVillas cleared significant amounts of invasive plants in 2023. Now it's time to choose our next steps.

Naturalists and KPVillas homeowners survey plants around the HOA pond.

We can choose to be better stewards of our collective resources. For specific action in our Indiana climate, see the Zionsville panel discussion for Restoring HOA Native Landscapes. How do you envision KPVillas moving in this direction? What choices should we make this spring and summer?

One HOA cited by the INPS created environment-friendly core principles and detailed guidelines for maintenance crews with the following goals:

  • Avoid attracting Canada geese

  • Be attractive to residents, support/improve property values

  • Be appropriate environmentally (sensitivity to pond, woods, etc.)

  • Assure safety for people, pets and wildlife

  • Have affordable installation and maintenance

  • Be managed according to current and emerging best practices.

Please contact Chuck Bueter or an HOA Board member to help prioritize native plants and to make cost-effective decisions in KPVillas landscaping. While green thumbs are especially welcome, gardening is certainly not a required skill set. Thanks for your consideration.

Should it stay or should it go?
